Ufford School 1873 ~ 1987

The following texts are published by kind permission of Derek Lay, widower of Rowena Lay the author.

Rowena spent the majority of her teaching career at Ufford School which she joined in September 1955.  Following her marriage to Derek in August 1958 the couple moved into the School House and resided there for the rest of their married life.

Rowena retired from the school in April 1983 and the school closed down in 1987 just four years later.

Rowena had accumulated a considerable archive of historic material over her 28 years working at the school and upon its closure she decided to put together a potted history of the school - these texts represent that work.

You will notice that some of the copied photographs are of poor quality given the age of the material, so if any villagers have any photographs of the school/school life we would be delighted to receive copies and add them to this document.
